U.S. President Donald Trump has issued one of his strongest public statements yet on the escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria, describing the situation as “a genocide” and accusing the Nigerian government of failing in its most basic responsibility: protecting its citizens.
Speaking during an interview on Fox News, Trump expressed outrage over what he called the massive, unchecked killings occurring across several regions in Nigeria. He argued that the world has remained silent for too long.
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide and I’m really angry about it,” Trump said.
In the interview, Trump criticized the U.S. government’s continued financial support to Nigeria, hinting that such aid could be withdrawn if the Nigerian authorities fail to take decisive action.
“We give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping. The Government has done nothing, they are ineffective,” he stated.
The former president accused Nigerian authorities of allowing Christian communities to be targeted “at will” by violent groups, adding that the tragedy has not received the global attention it deserves.
“They are killing Christians at will, and you know until I got involved in it two weeks ago, nobody even talked about it,” Trump claimed, suggesting he intends to push the issue further into international discourse.
Trump’s remarks come at a time when several regions in Nigeria continue to experience deadly attacks linked to extremist groups, armed herders, and criminal gangs — incidents that have repeatedly drawn condemnation from human rights organizations, religious bodies, and international observers.
His comments are expected to spark significant diplomatic discussion, both in Washington and Abuja, as global attention intensifies on Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
