Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has strongly condemned the latest wave of violence targeted at Christian communities in Nigeria, describing the attacks as unacceptable assaults on fundamental human rights.
In a statement released on Monday, Meloni reiterated that religious freedom is an inviolable right and urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable religious groups. She called for decisive action to identify and prosecute the perpetrators behind the “brutal attacks” that have continued to unsettle local communities.
“We firmly condemn today’s renewed violence against the Christian communities in Nigeria,” Meloni said. “We call on the Nigerian government to strengthen protection for Christian communities and all religious communities and to prosecute those responsible.”
The Italian Prime Minister also expressed Italy’s solidarity with the victims and communities who feel threatened because of their religious identity, reaffirming her country's commitment to defending freedom of worship globally.
Her remarks add to a growing chorus of international concern over persistent religiously motivated violence in parts of Nigeria, where Christian and Muslim communities have periodically faced targeted attacks by extremist groups and armed militias.
