Medical experts have cautioned the public against misleading claims suggesting that diabetes can be permanently cured through unverified herbal remedies, stressing that the condition requires proper medical diagnosis and long-term management.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. The disease occurs either when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, as seen in Type 1 diabetes, or when the body becomes resistant to insulin, which is common in Type 2 diabetes.
Health professionals say common symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision and slow-healing wounds.
According to medical experts, Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction that destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, while Type 2 diabetes is often associated with lifestyle factors such as poor diet, obesity, physical inactivity and family history.
Another form of the condition, known as gestational diabetes, may develop during pregnancy as a result of hormonal changes.
Doctors emphasise that although diabetes can be effectively managed through medication, healthy eating, regular exercise and routine blood sugar monitoring, there is currently no medically proven permanent cure for the disease.
They warned that claims promoting unverified herbal treatments as guaranteed cures could discourage patients from seeking appropriate medical care, potentially leading to severe complications including heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage and blindness.
Medical practitioners also noted that some herbal products may interact dangerously with prescribed medications or worsen a patient’s condition if taken without professional supervision.
Health experts encouraged individuals living with diabetes to maintain regular medical checkups, follow prescribed treatment plans and adopt healthier lifestyles to help control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of complications.
They further advised members of the public to rely on qualified healthcare professionals for treatment and avoid self-medication based on unverified health information circulating online and on social media.
According to specialists, early diagnosis, proper management and consistent lifestyle adjustments remain the most effective approaches to living a healthy and active life with diabetes.
