NAFDAC Clears BON Bread Manufacturer Over Shelf-Life Controversy

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, manufacturer of BON Bread, of any wrongdoing following allegations that the bread remained fresh for more than two months without molding. The controversy began after a social media blogger claimed on April 13, 2026, that a loaf of bread supplied for sale stayed unspoiled for over two months, sparking concerns about the possible use of harmful preservatives. Although the blogger did not initially identify the brand, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited later confirmed that the product involved was BON Bread and denied violating food safety standards. In response to the public concerns, NAFDAC launched an investigation to verify the claims. In a statement signed by the agency’s Director-General, Christianah Adeyeye, NAFDAC said officials from its Greater FCT Directorate inspected the company’s bakery facility in Abuja on April 20, 2026. The agency said bread samples and condiments were collected from the production facility, while additional samples were purchased from the open market for laboratory analysis. According to NAFDAC, the investigation found that the company complied with regulatory requirements and did not breach food safety regulations. “Laboratory findings revealed that calcium propionate was used as preservative, and that the amount used was within the limits specified in Codex Alimentarius (Food Code),” the agency stated. NAFDAC added that all BON Bread samples tested from both the factory and the open market met satisfactory standards.
