Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic blood disorder that belongs to a broader group of conditions known as sickle cell disease. It affects the red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.

Under normal conditions, red blood cells are round, soft, and flexible, allowing them to move smoothly through blood vessels. However, in people with sickle cell anaemia, some of these cells become abnormally shaped like a crescent or sickle. These deformed cells are rigid and sticky, which can obstruct or slow blood flow and reduce oxygen delivery to vital organs.

Current medical care for sickle cell anaemia focuses mainly on managing symptoms, reducing pain episodes, and preventing complications. However, ongoing medical advancements have introduced newer therapies that offer the possibility of long-term improvement and, in some cases, a cure.

Symptoms of Sickle Cell Anaemia

Symptoms of the condition usually begin to appear from around six months of age and can vary widely between individuals. They may also change in severity over time.

One of the major effects is anaemia, which occurs when sickle-shaped cells break down much faster than normal red blood cells. While healthy red blood cells last about 120 days, sickle cells often survive only 10 to 20 days. This shortage reduces oxygen supply in the body, leading to fatigue and weakness.

Another common feature is episodes of severe pain, often referred to as pain crises. These occur when sickle cells block small blood vessels, restricting blood flow to areas such as the chest, abdomen, and joints. The pain may last from a few hours to several days and can range from mild to extremely severe, sometimes requiring hospital treatment. Some individuals also experience long-term pain due to bone and joint damage.

Swelling in the hands and feet may also occur when circulation is blocked in these areas by sickled cells.

People with sickle cell anaemia are also more vulnerable to infections because the spleen, which helps protect the body, can become damaged over time. As a result, children with the condition often require routine vaccinations and preventive antibiotics to reduce the risk of serious infections.

The disease can also affect growth and development. Since red blood cells deliver oxygen and nutrients necessary for growth, a shortage can result in delayed physical development and delayed puberty in teenagers.

In some cases, vision problems may develop when sickled cells block small blood vessels supplying the eyes, potentially damaging the retina and affecting eyesight.
