The Imo State Government has formally transferred ownership of the Okigwe General Hospital to the Federal Ministry of Health, clearing the path for the commencement of operations at the newly approved Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Okigwe.
The handover was completed during a courtesy visit by officials of the Federal Ministry of Health to the Government House in Owerri, where they were received by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
The development is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state, particularly in the Okigwe zone and neighbouring communities, as the Federal Government assumes responsibility for managing and expanding the facility.
Speaking during the event, Governor Uzodimma stated that the state government had undertaken major infrastructural improvements at the hospital to facilitate a smooth transition and enable the immediate commencement of operations under federal management.
According to the governor, the upgrades were designed to ensure that residents gain access to improved healthcare services and specialized medical treatment closer to home.
He noted that the transfer reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and fostering cooperation with the Federal Government to improve the welfare of citizens.
Members of the Federal Ministry of Health delegation commended the state government for preparing the facility for a seamless takeover, describing the development as a significant step toward expanding healthcare capacity in the region.
The delegation expressed confidence that the readiness of the hospital would allow the Federal Medical Centre to begin operations promptly, bringing advanced medical services within easier reach of residents.
Healthcare stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre is expected to improve access to specialized treatment, create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, and strengthen medical service delivery across the area.
With the transition now completed, attention is expected to shift toward the operational rollout of the Federal Medical Centre and the expansion of healthcare services under federal administration.
