Former Labour Party presidential candidate and one of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures, Peter Obi, has declared that the Federal Government is making every possible effort to prevent him from emerging as a candidate in the 2027 presidential election, insisting, however, that those efforts will ultimately fail.
Obi made the remarks while addressing students, staff, and members of the academic community during a visit to Madonna University in Okija, Anambra State, where he encouraged young Nigerians not to be discouraged by challenges or intimidation but to remain focused on their goals and aspirations.
His comments came amid growing political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections, including recent legal battles involving political parties and intense public discussions over the evolving political landscape. Speaking candidly before his audience, Obi suggested that he was facing enormous political pressure behind the scenes, but maintained that he remained resolute in his determination to continue his political journey regardless of the obstacles placed before him.
According to the former Anambra State governor, many well-meaning Nigerians who desire positive leadership often become targets of discouragement and various forms of political resistance. He said the experiences he is currently going through are among the most difficult of his political career but emphasized that they have only strengthened his resolve rather than weakened it.
“If I were to tell you everything I am going through today, I probably would not even be standing here,” Obi told the audience. “People keep asking me whether I am still coming to Madonna University considering everything that is happening now, especially after the recent court ruling in Lokoja. My answer has remained the same: Yes, I will still come.”
The former presidential candidate noted that his decision to honour the invitation despite the prevailing political atmosphere reflects his belief that true leadership requires courage, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to one's convictions.
Obi stated that he had experienced numerous political setbacks throughout his career and had become accustomed to overcoming adversity. According to him, challenges are not reasons to abandon one's mission but opportunities to demonstrate resilience and strengthen one's resolve.
In one of the strongest remarks of his speech, Obi alleged that the Federal Government was actively working to prevent him from becoming a candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
“Today, the Federal Government of Nigeria is doing everything possible to stop me from becoming a candidate in this 2027 election. I can tell you that for a fact,” he declared. “But they will not win.”
Although Obi did not elaborate on the specific actions he believes are being taken against him, his comments are expected to generate significant political debate as preparations for the next general election gradually gather momentum.
His remarks come at a time when Nigeria's political environment has become increasingly active, with several court cases involving political parties, coalition talks among opposition groups, and discussions about possible realignments ahead of the 2027 polls dominating public discourse.
DDM News gathered that Obi used the occasion not only to address political developments but also to inspire students to develop resilience and maintain focus in pursuing their personal ambitions.
Speaking directly to the young audience, he emphasized that obstacles are an inevitable part of life and that every successful leader must learn how to overcome adversity rather than become discouraged by it.
According to him, individuals who never encounter challenges are unlikely to develop the strength and character necessary for leadership.
“If you live a life where there are no obstacles, then you are not truly living,” Obi said. “It is obstacles that build leaders. Therefore, whatever you choose to do in life, you must remain committed.”
He encouraged students to remain steadfast even when circumstances appear unfavorable, explaining that determination and consistency are often the deciding factors between success and failure.
“I want to get there, and I know it is not going to be easy,” he continued. “It will be difficult, but your determination and your commitment are what will take you there. Do not focus on the obstacles because they will always exist. Instead, keep your eyes on your destination.”
His motivational message resonated strongly with many students, who applauded his emphasis on perseverance, discipline, and long-term vision as essential qualities for achieving success in life.
Beyond delivering his speech, Obi also demonstrated his continued commitment to supporting education and healthcare through philanthropy.
During his visit to Madonna University, he announced a donation of ₦15 million to the institution to support its educational development. The donation was warmly received by the university community and adds to Obi's longstanding record of supporting schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions across Nigeria.
Earlier the same day, Obi had also visited the Holy Rosary Hospital in Emekuku, Owerri, where he similarly made a financial donation in support of the hospital's healthcare services. His visits to both institutions formed part of what many observers describe as his consistent engagement with educational and medical institutions, irrespective of political seasons.
DDM News understands that Obi has, over the years, earned recognition for personally contributing to schools, hospitals, religious organizations, and humanitarian causes in different parts of Nigeria. Supporters frequently cite these interventions as evidence of his commitment to public service beyond electoral politics.
Political observers say Obi's latest remarks may further intensify conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential race, particularly as various political actors continue consultations, coalition-building efforts, and legal battles that could significantly shape the country's political landscape.
While his allegation that the Federal Government is attempting to prevent his candidacy is likely to attract reactions from political stakeholders, the comments also underscore the increasingly competitive atmosphere that is already emerging ahead of the next election cycle.
For many supporters gathered at Madonna University, however, the central message of Obi's address extended beyond politics. It was a call for resilience, courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment in the face of adversity. He urged young Nigerians not to surrender their dreams because of temporary setbacks but to remain focused on the bigger picture, insisting that every worthwhile achievement demands sacrifice, persistence, and faith.
As political activities continue to gather pace across the country, Peter Obi's declaration is expected to remain a subject of national conversation, adding another chapter to Nigeria's evolving democratic journey and reinforcing his position as one of the country's most prominent opposition figures heading toward the 2027 general elections.
